Mexican Food at Azul Condesa

This is a joint project, of local restauranteurs Gonzalo Serrano and Salomé Álvarez (from Ligaya and Capicua) with Ricardo Muñoz Zurita, a know Mexican chef. Muñoz Zurita has published several books on Mexican gastronomy and runs both cafeterias at the National University. I especially admire this Ricardo, because he is in an amazing researcher who has extensively documented our traditional ingredients and flavors.

The dishes remind me of the cooking of our grandmothers. They are simple, with lots of flavor. It is 100% mexican food. The setting is totally informal and it invites you to spend the evening talking with friends and tasting a wide array of mezcales and tequilas from their drinks menu.

There is a large non-smoking terrace downstairs and a smoking terrace up-stairs. Every so often they change the decoration featuring up-and-coming Mexican young artists. The place really has a great vibe.

For starters I recommend you try the buñuelos of duck with mole as well as the tamal with chard over tomato sauce. The tamal is really light and very tasty. As a second dish I recommend the “cochinita pibil” a traditional dish from Southern Mexico, served at this restaurant with warm hand made tortillas and “frijoles” (beans). The preparation is very delicate and the achiote does not over power the dish. Or you could order the venison with mole, which is spectacular (picture included). For dessert you should order the foam of guanabana (soursop) with zapote negro (black sapodilla), both very traditional mexican fruits that you need to try if you are visiting this beautiful country.

I like this restaurant, because they serve good Mexican food in a relaxed setting, at very reasonable prices.

I have eaten and photographed my way through more than 40 countries and 4 continents. Food is my passion. My personal philosophy is that life should be lived to the fullest. To enjoy it, I share it with my husband, family and friends. Food spiced up with a little bit of travel is my type of thing. Of course I like staying at a good hotel or dining at an expensive restaurant, but I also enjoy finding remote villages, visiting the markets, eating street food and learning about the local ingredients and food from the locals. I speak Spanish, Portuguese, and French, which have definitely come in handy through out my travels. When I’m at home, I love cooking. I prefer seasonal ingredients and I am interested in finding ways to eat better and healthier. I am a trained professional chef with wine studies, TV host, freelance writer and photographer. My hobbies are scuba diving, skiing and golf. I come from a bicultural background, with family on both sides of the border. I have a passion for healthy Latino cooking. I currently live in Mexico and love it!
